Silent Film (WA Only)
Description
Participants use video production skills to create a “silent” movie and a musical score to accompany the film. Silent films encourage students to think about music and its application to other forms of art and technology.
NOTE: Silent film means NO spoken words that can be heard. People can be talking in your film, but should never be heard.

Forward to 50: Lost in Time
The past has something to teach us—but first, you have to find your way back.
Create an original silent film in which a character discovers an object connected to one of the past five decades—the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, or 2010s. Upon interacting with the object, the character is transported into that decade.
Through visual storytelling and an original musical score, tell the story of the character's experience in the past, their attempt to return to the present, and what they ultimately choose to carry forward with them.
No spoken dialogue may be used. The story must be communicated through action, expression, cinematography, visual elements, and music. The soundtrack should do more than accompany the film—it should help tell the story, establish the time period, communicate emotion, and move the audience through the character's journey.
The film must conclude with a clear connection to the theme Forward to 50.

Event Deadlines
January 21, 2027
Students will need their Participant ID number, and password, from their advisor. Only the team captain will be able to upload the file.
Students submit the Documentation Portfolio for scoring.
Scoring will be based on items a-e of the portfolio.
March 18, 2027

Semifinalists will interview at State Conference
Washington TSA Rules
To compete, students must:
Belong to a currently affiliated TSA chapter
Be registered (by their TSA advisor) for competition by December 18, 2026 ($35)
Compete in the January 21, 2027 virtual competition (see individual event pages for details)
Be selected as a top competitor in their event(s) and invited to participate at State
Number of competitors is dependent on specific event
Qualifying competitor lists will be published by February 7, 2027
State Conference registration week February 22-26, 2027 (see state conference page for details)
At the state level, 3 teams (may be a team of 1 at advisor’s discretion) per chapter may compete.
