TEAMS stands for Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science. It is a theme-based competition that provides middle and high school students with the opportunity to discover engineering with the potential to make a difference in the world.

Teams of 2-4 work together, applying math and science to solve real world engineering problems in creative ways. TEAMS provides students with confidence to pursue STEM fields, collaboration and problem solving skills, and the opportunity to break into a STEM path. 

 
 

How Does Competition Work? 

The TEAMS theme for 2027 is "Engineering a Smarter World." 

Competition is split into 4 parts: design/build, mathematical modeling, essay, and multiple choice test components. Competition takes place between January 13, 2027 and February 17, 2027. Typically, TEAMS chapter advisors determine where and when competition takes place in a given year. (Potentially, WTSA could organize a state-level TEAMS competition for all registered chapters in the state, or one on either side of the state) After registration, the first competition is state level competition. The competition components are:

  • Design/Build—Teams design and build a solution to an engineering challenge.

  • Multiple Choice—Teams use math and science skills to solve real-world engineering challenges in the form of a test. 

  • Essay—Teams research and write an in-depth essay submitted electronically.

  • Mathematical Modeling - Teams develop a mathematical model to determine a solution based on given data.

In order to qualify for national competition, teams’ overall state level score must be among the top nationally.  

How Do I “Join” TEAMS?

TEAMS is an independent program, but it is run through TSA. You are able to register for TEAMS without a TSA affiliated chapter. Registration for state level competition begins August 17, 2026, and ends Jan 8, 2027. Register your TEAMS chapter here. In 2026 - 2027, TEAMS chapters will also receive special benefits from WTSA. 

TEAMS Perks and Benefits

Available for the 2026 - 2027 school year, WTSA is offering unique benefits to new and returning TEAMS chapters and members. This year, TEAMS chapters will receive free WTSA state pins, entries for a special raffle bucket at the state conference, and recognition at the state conference.
